How to Write a Resume

A resume is who you are, but on paper. It should give the employer an idea of what you are all about, and whether or not you are the best candidate for the job. This is why it is so important to put a lot of time and effort into your resume writing.

If you are applying for a certain job with individual requirements and qualifications, you must focus your resume around that particular job. You do not want to send all employers the same resume as they will all have different needs.

For example, if you are applying for a receptionist position, you will want to boast about your clerical expertise, not how much experience you have working at a coffee shop. Rather you will want to extract the things you did at the coffee shop that would have something to do with the receptionist position. Perhaps you handled cash, or did the paperwork. Customer service is one qualification that can be put on a resume for a wide array of jobs, even reception, as you will be meeting and greeting people all the time. However, try to word it so that you are talking about having great customer service skills such as how you are outgoing and friendly.

When you are learning how to write a resume you will need to expand your vocabulary. Not to the point where you do not even know what you are saying, but rather use words that explain you and the work you do. Here are some key words to use when writing a resume.

• Organized

• Multi-tasker

• Hard-working

• Responsible

• Team member

• Creative

• Independent

• Motivated/Energetic

• Honest

You must also be careful not to put too much on your resume, so here are the key topics to include.

• Personal information, i.e. name, address, and phone number.

• Objective

• Background of education

• Work experience

• Other skills

It is a good idea to list all of these things in chronological order. It keeps your resume organized, and it is the more popular way of writing a good resume. Try to keep the resume short and sweet. A good resume should not exceed a page, but sometimes this is just out of the question. You must keep your resume up-to-date, so if it has been a while you should make sure all the information is accurate.

Do not make silly mistakes like spelling and grammatical errors. No one will want to employ you if you cannot even put together a decent resume.
