RESUME: Dos and Don'ts

A resume is the first medium of interaction between you and the potential employer. Your resume represents who you are on a word document or a piece of paper. It"s an advertisement that sells you to the employers. Therefore, if you need to be selected among 1000 applicants, it becomes mandatory to make your resume perfect and error free.


Over Fifty and Jobless

Not what we planned for ourselves when we graduated from high school 33 plus years ago. Full of hope and dreams and ready to conquer the world we were. All we had to do was get a college degree or learn a skill, stay the course, and wait to enjoy the fruits of the "Land of Opportunity". Our parents and mentors told us to seek employment with a solid company, work hard, live a little for today and to put some away for our golden years. It all seemed like sound advice and wise counsel at the time. Some of us where adventurous and chose to reach even higher. We chose to leverage our education and experience and start businesses. Surely that would speed up our savings process and free us to retire in our fifties.


How to Sign up for the IRS Enrolled Agent Exam with Prometric

You can sign up for the exam at the Prometric Website.

Q: How do I sign up for the EA exam?

A: Go to the Prometric Website and download their EA Candidate Bulletin. It will answer all your technical questions about how to sign up for the exam, and what to do once you pass. Our books also include a complete overview of how to sign up for the exam, study for the exam, and what to expect when you go to the Prometric testing center.

÷ Q: Can I take anything with me to the testing center?

A: Exam takers cannot take anything with them into the testing room, except for their Identification (such as a driver"s license) or a medical device, such as a hearing aid or a pair of glasses. If you need accommodations for a disability, you must contact the test center in advance. All the exams are in English. Difficulty understanding English is NOT considered a disability for test-taking purposes. However, if you have a physical disability, (such as blindness), the test center can make special arrangements if you contact them in advance.

Q: How many questions are on the exam?

A: Each section of the exam is 100 questions. The cost of each section is $101.00, starting in 2010.

Q: Can I use a calculator?

A: Yes, the testing center will provide you with a calculator, pencils, and scratch paper. You cannot use your own calculator. You cannot take the scratch paper home with you.

÷ Q: Can I go to the bathroom during the test?

A: Yes, you are allowed to leave the room during the exam to go to the bathroom, but the time on your exam clock DOES NOT STOP! So, it is a good idea to go to the bathroom and eat before your test. Try to avoid leaving the test room at all costs so you can use all the time allotted to you.

÷ Q: When will I get my scores?

A: Immediately. When you complete the exam, you will÷  get a score report. If you pass, you will not know how many you missed or got correct. If you fail, you will get a score report showing your grade. The IRS has set the scaled passing score at 105. If your score is 102, you know that you were really close to passing. If your score is 65, you know that you need to study more.

Q: Do I have to take all three parts of the exam at once, or can I space them out?

A: You can sign up to take each part of the EA exam on separate days, so you can space them months apart if you wish, but you only have 18 months to finish taking all three parts, otherwise you "lose" any passing scores and you have to start over. So make sure that when you sign up, you allow yourself enough time to study between each part, but allow yourself enough time to re-take portions that you may fail. A good idea is to space each exam part about 60 days apart. This will leave you plenty of time to study between sections and also time to re-take parts that you may have failed.÷ 

Q: What about the new tax preparer registration rules in 2011?

A: Enrolled agents are exempt from registration, just like CPAs and attorneys.÷
