How Long Should Your Resume Be?

It can be a difficult line to tread, hitting on the right length of a resume: too short and the prospective employer thinks you haven"t much to offer. Too long and the prospective employer gets bored and loses interest moving on to the next one.

The rule of thumb, when talking about the length of examples of resumes and their ideal length, is that it should fit on one page. This offers the reader an at-a-glance picture of one"s skills, abilities and past experiences. However if this leaves out key details that are relevant to be revealed to a prospective employer, then this one page document would be inadequate for your purposes.

So really there is no ideal length that a resume should be in terms of whether it needs to be one or two or three pages. An ideal resume is one that states all that is relevant and pertinent to the job at hand, which leaves out no germane details, and also that is brief and to the point, without being long winded with unnecessary items on it.

Peruse the free resumes available online by all means, but make sure that the one that you create is apposite to your circumstance and abilities. And keep the following in mind when deciding how to write a resume and more particularly how to keep it the right length:

1. Any job opening or vacancy that is advertised is likely to receive a lot of applications; more than you probably may even estimate. So here, it is important that when a person is sifting through dozens of resumes (if not more) yours is not the one that hits the trash pile. And it could well do that if it is too long winded and takes too much time for the person to sift through and separate the relevant from the irrelevant.

2. It is however important to mention all the details such as skill sets and experiences that will make your resume unique and will help it stand out. So do not leave these items out in the interests of brevity, even if it means that the total length goes beyond a page

3. To decrease the length of the resume, use bullet points that state shortly what you want to get across rather than use entire sentences and wordy language. Use fewer words and shorter sentences to decrease the overall document length rather than leave out any particulars or details that are relevant.

4. The length of the resume should reflect your experience and expertise and the amount of time you have spent in a particular industry.
